Getting Started

The first step to learning to drive is to make sure you have a valid provisional driving licence.

You can apply for your first provisional licence online via the DVLA website (click here). Alternatively, you can apply by completing a D1 application form, which is available from the DVLA form ordering service (click here) or Post Office® branches. When applying, you will need to provide original proof of identity, a passport-style colour photograph, and the appropriate fee.

For car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday. However, you may apply for your licence up to three months before you turn 17. If you apply early, you will still need to wait until your birthday before you can take your theory test or begin driving lessons.

You must be 17 years old and in possession of your provisional licence before you can take your first driving lesson.

If you choose to practise driving with an accompanying driver (such as a family member or friend), they must:

  • Be at least 21 years old

  • Have held a full UK driving licence (in the relevant vehicle category) for a minimum of three years

Learning safe driving habits from the very beginning is essential, as bad habits can be difficult to break later on. It is unlikely that anyone other than an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) will have the training, experience, and up-to-date knowledge needed to teach you correctly.

As a Grade A DVSA-Approved Driving Instructor, I have the qualifications, skills, and experience to coach you safely and confidently, helping you become a competent driver for life, not just for test day.

Preparing for a theory test

The current national average pass rate for the car theory test is under 50%, so it’s important to make sure you are well prepared before taking your test.

Good preparation will improve your confidence and significantly increase your chances of passing first time. To help you practise and refresh your knowledge, you can use free online theory test practice resources available on the Safe Driving for Life website.

Regular practice will help you become familiar with the questions, hazard perception clips, and the overall test format — giving you the best possible chance of success on test day.
